Phygital Products and Authentication: Linking Physical Goods to Digital Records
“Phygital” products pair a physical item with a digital token or record: a voucher you redeem for the real product, a digital twin that proves authenticity, or both. For brands the value is in proof of ownership, resale and a direct link to the customer after the sale.

Three ways to link physical and digital
| Approach | How it works | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Redeemable token | Customer buys a token first and redeems it for the item | Buyers on resale markets purchasing already-redeemed tokens |
| Digital twin | Each item gets a unique record, often via an NFC chip | Chip cost and durability, data ownership |
| Certificate of authenticity | A transferable record moves with the item on resale | Keeping the record in sync with the physical item |
Getting redemption right
- Make the token state visible: redeemed or not, on every marketplace.
- Keep claim windows short and communicate them clearly.
- Plan shipping, returns and customs before the drop, not after.
Authentication and resale
An NFC chip or secure tag linked to an onchain record lets a buyer check that an item is genuine and see its history. It does not stop a determined counterfeiter from copying packaging, so the tag itself must be hard to clone and the check must be easy for the buyer.
Frequently asked questions
