Last week former US president Trump announced his NFT collection – the Trump Digital Trading Cards. What seemed first like a bad joke or a scam (judging the first impression of the website) was indeed real. Weird to say that this collection has more utilities than many other projects. Holders can win exclusive experiences with Trump via sweepstakes such as dinners, meet and greets, Zoom calls, or even playing golf with him. This very much reminded me of the VeeFriends collection by Gary Vaynerchuk, where some lucky holders also got real-life access to Gary. While this all appears under the…
Around a month ago, Warner Bros. Discovery launched a movie on the blockchain. While this was a rather silent launch, it illustrates another approach for NFTs beyond a pure collectible – we did a deep dive on what we can learn from WB. This wasn’t WB’s first experiment in Web3. As a film and entertainment studio they already started experimenting with NFT collectibles based on their IP/movie franchises with e.g. Space Jam, Matrix, Looney Tunes or the Conjuring last year. Starting with pure trading card collectibles they discovered more use cases e.g. physical toy redemptions and token-gated content. Now WB…
Last week I received my first physical-digital (“phygital” – terrible word) NFT product experience: the Nike AR Hoodie. To get this, I had to buy the Nike AR Hoodie NFT upfront. Later this NFT could be used similarly to a voucher to “redeem” the physical hoodie for order/shipment. Moving from last year’s paradigm of pure digital collectibles towards utility, we have seen this phygital NFT theme more and more with examples from fashion and luxury like Nike, Adidas, Tiffany & Co. or Rimowa. The NFT allows its holder to claim one physical product core to the brand, but sometimes other…

With Nike’s announcement of its new web3 platform “.swoosh”, Nike pushes its stand-alone web3 brand strategy. It’s been almost a year since the RTFKT Clone X launch, which was followed by the historic acquisition by Nike, marking a pivotal point for Nike’s standing and engagement in the space. Since then, Nike has started collaborating with RTFKT on different co-branded NFT drops like Cryptodunks, MNLTH 2 and Skin Vial as well as phygital products that can be forged like the Nike AR Hoodie. Today Nike announced .swoosh (“dot swoosh”), Nike’s web3 platform which they call the “home for its virtual creations”.…
1.5 years after their first ever NFT “Blue Prints from the Metaverse”, Rimowa continued its venture into the web3 space with a larger NFT drop: the Meta-Artisan Collection. For the continuation of their web3 go-to-market, they partnered with the Web3-native digital fashion studio RTFKT. Having already done a suitcase collaboration in 2018 with Supreme, this fits well, giving the brand a streetwear touch and addressing a younger target group beyond business travel. The pre-launch was accompanied by a strong storytelling component with frequent video snippets and interactive quests to be solved by the community to uncover more details on the…
